The new Allen Institute Headquarters building in Seattle, Washington is a state-of-the-art research facility housed in two historic buildings, built in the 1920's, in an area of the city once known as “auto row", a 12-block stretch of Westlake Avenue that was home to auto showrooms for decades.  The Ford McKay Building (1922) and Pacific McKay Building (1925) were originally designed with stunning architectural details, including terra cotta facades and granite exterior features and with indoor details rarely seen today, including a marble and tile fountain, decorative stairs, arched entries and wood transom window frames.  The goal of the project partners (listed below) was to preserve the buildings history while improving the building envelope for energy efficiency and to focus on all aspects of the design to create a sustainable and workable space for the new Allen Institute headquarters.

While still maintaining the buildings historic features, the project team went to great lengths to give the building a high performance exterior to conserve energy, maximize natural light and improve fresh air. The mechanical design included a chilled beam cooling system to reduce energy with beam type's DID631, DID632 and the specially designed DID402 top-discharge active chilled beams (shown in second image as an exposed mount installation on the perimeter of the space).

The result is a sustainable building that is home to custom-designed robotic systems, automated technologies, state-of-the-art laboratory space and high-tech computer systems all working to support the Allen Institute's mission "to accelerate the understanding of how the human brain works in health and disease. Using a big science approach, we generate useful public resources, drive technological and analytical advances, and discover fundamental brain properties through integration of experiments, modeling and theory."
