The University of Hawaii Cancer Center, located on the John A. Burns School of Medicine campus, was designed in collaboration between Honolulu located Shimakowa+Nakamura and Los Angeles based ZGF Architects and opened in February 2013. The $103 million and 150,000 square-foot project is a five-story facility providing biomedical research labs and office space. The building was designed to meet the LEED Silver certification and is the first project in Hawaii to use chilled beam technology.
Laboratory requirements are different than in other environments. For this project, TROX USA provided active chilled beams type DID632 for laboratory and office space cooling. The focus was to minimize the Cancer Center's energy consumption, while maintaining a high air quality and safety. For that the goal was to make the laboratories and the whole center as energy efficient as possible. Due to its energy efficiency, reduced ductwork and plant room sizes it can help to achieve those goals. In order to test the chilled beam system for this type of hot and humid climate, a series of studies by WSP Built Ecology and in our test facilities were performed, the products were customized and further efficiencies in the technology resulted.
Due to the sustainable features such as the TROX USA chilled beams, efficient lighting systems allowing the maximum of natural light and other environment friendly technologies the University of Hawaii Cancer Center expects to minimize the energy consumption. The energy use is expected to be approximately 30% lower than the minimum requirements for comparable buildings specified by the ASHRAE Standard 90.1. Due to the use of as much as possible natural lighting the center's lighting energy is reduced by about 5%.
